DHI technique
Keys and benefits
The DHI technique is the newest technique in the field of hair surgery. It is characterized by the use of a specific tool known as a “DHI implantator” or “choi” type needle. The extraction of the follicles is very similar to other transplant techniques, but its implementation is quite different.
What is the DHI technique?
The meaning of DHI is “Direct Hair Implantation”, and it is a direct hair implementation. It consists of the extraction of follicles from the donor area of the scalp, a step that it shares with most hair insertion techniques, but it is characterized by the use of an implanting pen called “choi”, which is why this technique is also known as “choi method”.
This pen consists of a hollow needle into which the extracted follicle is inserted, and it is implanted directly without undergoing chemical treatment. This is an advantage because the time the follicle spends outside the body is much less than the time it takes to be treated, so the implementation is stronger and safer. When using this instrument, it is not necessary to create microchannels, since the needle is in charge of making the incision at the very moment of the transplant.
Advantages of DHI technique
The DHI technique or choi method offers several advantages compared to other techniques, as the implementation system varies greatly.
It is not necessary to shave the receiving area.
The grafts don’t spend as much time outside the body, fortifying the implant.
Recovery is faster.
Damage to nearby tissues in the recipient area is minimal.
No scabbing or scarring.
Higher density per square meter is achieved.
Follicles are not treated chemically.
When implemented using a needle, it is easier to control the direction of the follicle.
Performing a hair transplant with the DHI technique allows for greater density in the recipient area, so the final result is more attractive. However, it must be taken into account that this methodology has certain limitations depending on the circumstances. Not everyone is suitable for this intervention, since DHI implanters have specific measures and depending on the thickness of the follicle will work better or worse.
In the same line, the DHI method of hair grafting is recommended above all for patients with a low level of hair loss. This decision has to be taken by the doctor in charge of the hair surgery, since depending on the case, the FUE technique will be more appropriate.
How is performed the DHI technique
The first step of the DHI graft is very similar to the FUE technique and similar, except that in this process it is not necessary to shave the recipient area. The patient’s frontal profile is drawn to have a guide to work on and, after anesthetizing the donor area, the follicles are extracted one by one, implementing them in the recipient area as soon as they are extracted.
The choi feathers have a hollow point in which the extracted follicle is located and a pushing system. In this type of technique the precision is much more delicate, always placing the needle at an angle of between 40º and 45º on the scalp and carefully performing the push to introduce the hair little by little into the microchannel, opened by the needle itself.
The DHI technique in Turkey has a variation known as the sapphire-tipped DHI technique, characterized precisely by the sapphire tip of the choi needles. The procedure is very similar, but the sapphire tip of the instrument makes the incision more precise, which favors the implementation of the hair and reduces the aggressiveness of the technique, which is already minimal.
